Travel Guy: Peaceful Mirbeau resort in Plymouth makes quite an impression

Monet well spent

Think of it as a way to get away without going too far.

The Mirbeau Inn & Spa at The Pinehills may be just that.

This new 50-room destination is close enough to Boston that it’s easy to get to, but elegant enough to serve as a sybaritic retreat.

The hotel, a $20 million project in the final stages of preparation and slated to open next month, is a newly constructed retreat overlooking the Pinehills Village Green and Shops and the 18th hole of the Rees Jones-designed Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth. The Mirbeau currently has two main sections: The Manor House and the Guest House. The European-style Manor House has 16 rooms, including two romantic suites located in the turret sections of the structure and two one-bedroom suites. Manor House rooms have king and single-queen bedrooms. Insider’s tip: While the turret suites may be striking — and beautifully appointed — the one-bedroom suites are actually a bit larger, if space is a consideration.

The Guest House has 34 rooms, and new construction will soon add more rooms. Phase two will open in June 2016, with guest cottages bringing an additional 40 rooms to the property.

All guest rooms have fireplaces, tiled walk-in showers in the oversized bathrooms, soaking tubs, double sinks and views of the gardens, which boast inspiration by no less than impressionist master Claude Monet’s own gardens in Giverny, France. Expect placid, welcoming, natural environments with plenty of water elements and flowers. Monet’s work is also reflected in the soft light and warm colors found throughout.

Rooms are accented with the Mirbeau’s own line of hair and body care products, and rooms feature the Mirbeau luxury bed, exclusively made with a custom mattress, bedding and down comforter.

The Guest House is connected to the Manor House by a timber-framed covered bridge that spans over the 14,000-square-foot Spa Mirbeau.

The spa offers a full menu of massages, body wraps and facial treatments, and features workout facilities and yoga and aerobic programs. Among the offerings: The Mirbeau Signature, which is a 50- or 100-minute classic Swedish massage; Monet’s Favorite Fragrance, an aromatherapy treatment featuring a choice of 12 blends of natural essential oils, along with a 50- or 100-minute Swedish massage; and the Impressionist’s Retreat body wrap — thermal Moore Mud is painted on the body, which is then wrapped in warm, herbal-soaked linens designed to draw out impurities and toxins.

Before or after your treatment, feel free to nap in the resting area (which has a heated foot massage pool) or plunge into the outdoor whirlpool spa. (For a full menu of spa offerings, go to mirbeau.com/pinehills/spa.)

The hotel is home to two restaurants. Henri-Marie, in the old Family Chapel next to the Manor House, welcomes guests with vaulted ceilings, a 1930s Parisian art deco design and serves French-inspired cuisine. The Mirbeau Wine Bar and Bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a more simple yet elegant setting. Locally sourced ingredients are used and guests can take a short walk from the spa, in their robes, and not feel out of place. Both Henri-Marie and the Bistro will operate under the expert hand of executive chef (and Massachusetts native) Stephen Coe.

Early visitors take note: Two packages are currently available. The Bienvenue Weekend Package for two includes accommodations for two nights — Friday and Saturday — a split of champagne upon arrival, breakfast each morning in the Bistro and one 50-minute spa treatment per person. Prices start at $1,130 for rooms, and $1,435 for suites.

The Bienvenue Midweek Package includes one night’s accommodations, Sunday through Thursday, a split of champagne and breakfast in the Bistro. Guest rooms start at $345 and suites start at $490. The package offers are available between June 15-30.

The Romance Package includes two nights’ accommodations, one 50-minute couples massage, a full breakfast each morning, dinner for two with a wine pairing at Henri-Marie and rose petal turndown each evening. For the Romance Package, rooms start at $1,245 and suites at $1,540. (For a complete list of offers or to book, call 877-647-2328 or go to mirbeau.com.)

Given the hotel’s proximity to the Pinehills Golf Club, golf-related packages are likely to be added in the future.

The Mirbeau Inn and Spa is a 45-minute drive from Boston. It is the second property in the Mirbeau Collection; the original Monet-inspired retreat is located in Skaneateles in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
