And if we don't like a story, well, we're soon on to the next one.
Why the short story? On its face, these works are short—so no more all-nighters to finish the book club's selected novel on time. More significantly, these works present fiction that is creative, imaginative, powerful, and focused. Despite being short in length, these stories do not want for depth. They address important life issues, present memorable characters, introduce us to new cultures and the diverse views of younger generations. And an added benefit is that we are introduced to the writings of the literary stars of tomorrow while also reconnecting with well-loved classic authors who find the short story to be the best format for their tale.
We meet twice monthly. Each meeting we discuss three assigned stories from various books; most years we have used the Best American Short Stories series. Together we laugh, cry, and dig deep for the author's meaning and how it may apply to our lives. Most times we find that sharing our thoughts, impressions, responses helps us to better understand and appreciate the writer's intentions. And while learning from each other, we further expand our visions on life.
We have stayed together as a group these many years because we enjoy these discussions, love the company, and cherish the journeys of exploration we take together. And if we don't like a story, well, we're soon on to the next one. Finally, thanks to our casual approach, whether English major, therapist, or math whiz, we all contribute to make this time together special.
We welcome all to come and discover the short story, a genre that thankfully the Nobel Prize considered worthy of fine literature—when it gave its literature award to Alice Munro. And in connection with the 25th celebration, we offer a thanks to The Pinehills for helping to make our personal book club adventure a much enjoyed happening.
