It's that kind of neighborhood. When someone has an illness, surgery or tragically loses a spouse, neighbors are there to help.
Barbara and I settled into our new lives here, taking advantage of the walking trails and beginning a nightly ritual of strolling the two connecting streets in Vista Point, usually after dark, often marveling at how much of the night sky revealed the stars above. It was pretty dark up here in those early days.
We moved here from Lowell, hoping to escape much of the cold and snow that often tortured us in the winter. Memories of using a roof rake to clear snow were still fresh when we opted to come to Plymouth. But we didn't leave the snow behind of course, as a few weeks after we moved in a fierce blizzard hit the southeast coast and we got a good taste of how scary the winds can be up here. We even lost power in the middle of the night.
As a photographer, this place is just made for me. About a year or two after moving in I started contributing to the local magazine, Stroll Pinehills and now I shoot for them regularly, which gives me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful residents around the various neighborhoods.
I discovered Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary just down off Beaver Dam Road, and what a marvelous place that has become over the years. I shoot there regularly. I go in all kinds of weather. During the pandemic, I missed being able to walk over there as they were transforming the area. But in February 2021, it was the first place I went when I was sufficiently recovered from a bout with Covid.
I think one of the most meaningful things about moving here has been all the wonderful friends and neighbors we've met along the way. People here look out for one another. When we were in the midst of the pandemic, my wife was celebrating her milestone 65th birthday, but with everything pretty much shut down, it was a pretty sedate affair. But then the doorbell rang, and there in the street, safely distanced from one another, fully masked were about 25 of our neighbors all singing Happy Birthday. When I was sick with Covid, neighbors would offer to pick up groceries for us since my wife had to quarantine. It's that kind of neighborhood. When someone has an illness, surgery or tragically loses a spouse, neighbors are there to help.
I'll end by noting that my wife and I regularly say how fortunate we are to have been able to settle here for our retirement. We have a great hospital right up the road (where I've been a patient several times, and now volunteer at), beautiful local surroundings, an abundance of places for my photography, access to the Cape and great neighbors. It's been a wonderful place to spend this chapter of our lives.
