The Rye Tavern and future Pinehills around the time I was born.
Of course, the arrival of The Pinehills was controversial and scary to many of us locals. In my former business I had dealings with the Green Company and had seen a number of their projects, all of which were outstanding. As I drive through today, I am amazed that Old Sandwich Road remains largely the same, and grateful that they did such a tasteful job.
After Martha Sone's restaurant vacated, Tony Green approached my uncle about opening a restaurant there due to the family's prior ownership of Locke Ober's in Boston. Then my uncle approached me, and a group of us started the Rye Tavern in February 2011, named for the rye field across the road. I became the sole owner in 2020 after buying my partners out during COVID. It was a risky and scary time, but I felt we were one of the best-positioned restaurants to be able to weather the period. We had nearly three acres to spread out on so the distancing was not an issue when we could use the outside. The inside was a challenge. I had a hiatus in ownership from summer 2021 to winter 2024 during which time my niece owned it.
We love the restaurant, primarily for our incredible staff, some of which have been there since the beginning! The old building presents constant problems, which keeps me busy behind the scenes. No place has more historic charm and gardens in the area.
