I lost my husband less than a year after I moved to the Pinehills but when I saw that Laurelwood Assisted Living was being built, I devised a plan to bring my mother, Lorraine Kaplan, to live in The Pinehills near me.

She was one of the first residents to move in, and immediately made friends with both the residents and staff. She was thrilled with her sunny, spacious room with lots of windows. My sisters helped furnish mom’s apartment with some familiar things and some new, fashionable items.

My mom told all her friends and family Laurelwood was like a 5 star hotel!

She took stretching classes, art class, ceramics, and was a frequent winner of word games. She loved the musical entertainment that was brought in, and always encouraged me to attend. She went on field trips to museums, Priscilla Beach Theatre, and even a first time ever fishing expedition! The staff used to joke about her racing down the halls with her walker barely touching the floor so she could get to her full schedule of activities.

I loved having her nearby so I could stop and visit on my way back from exercise class or when I picked up my mail. I enjoyed frequent lunches or dinners with my mom in the Laurelwood dining room. We lit the candles together for Chanukah, sang the traditional blessings and explained the holiday to the residents who attended. The kitchen staff always prepared a special meal for the jewish holidays. I brought in a challah and my mom delighted in sharing it with her friends.

It wasn’t long after she was there that my mom became a resident guide to assist new residents in their transition.

She lived the last 3 years of her life at Laurelwood and I’m not sure which one of us enjoyed the closeness it afforded us more. The staff, from the manager, to the aides and wait staff, all became attached to my mom and I have maintained some of those friendships which my mom cherished. – Robin Gross
