Thank You Val, Betsy and Joyce

When we moved to Plymouth, MA, we knew one person there. My husband Paul had scheduled his second knee replacement in Boston, long before we even saw, much less purchased and closed on our new home in The Pinehills. In fact, he had the surgery two weeks after we moved. This was also happily, the Massachusetts winter when all previous records for snowfall were broken.

Since he couldn't do much in the way of actual physical work for a while, I took over the job of getting us settled.

Happily, our local post office had, and still has, three amazing women who took me under their collective wings. They advised me about everything from where to shop, to where I could walk my dog, to which story of mine would or wouldn't fit into the local paper. (They thought my clever piece on a double knee replacement might not fly. They were right, I tossed it.)

One day, as I entered the Post Office, I loudly declared that a person as important as I was should NOT have to wait for a parking place. "Am I or am I not an almost-world-famous newspaper columnist?" I whined. The next day, Val handed me a home-made PRESS sign to put on the dashboard of my car.

I sometimes think we don't give enough credit to our local, hard-working postal employees.

I have to say, these three women who helped me went way beyond what some might call their duties. And I will always be grateful for that. – Jonnie Garstka
