Wednesday Unwind - The History of Sacrifice Rock

20 Years of Stories

May 27, 2020     20 Years of Stories, Wednesday Unwind

Sacrifice Rock, (AKA Manittoo Asseinah,) Plymouth’s “Other Rock”, is an important Wampanoag site located in The Pinehills alongside Old Sandwich Road – the same route the first inhabitants here traveled. Maintained by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, Sacrifice Rock has been a travelers’ landmark since centuries before English settlers arrived.

We visited Sacrifice Rock with Plymouth historian, Jim Baker. Listen as he tells us about Wampanoag gestures of "sacrifice" made to receive the blessing of a safe journey. Even today when you visit Sacrifice Rock you’ll find "offerings" that visitors have placed on or around the rock.
